Start the New Year Fresh: Why Cleaning Your Range Hood Should Be on Your List

As the New Year begins, many of us feel inspired to clear out the clutter and start fresh. While you’re organizing closets and wiping down forgotten shelves, don’t overlook one of the hardest-working and most overlooked areas in your kitchen: the range hood.

Why the Range Hood Matters

Your range hood or vent keeps your kitchen air clean by filtering out grease, smoke, and cooking odors. Over time, these filters collect layers of oil and grime that can reduce efficiency and even create a fire hazard. Giving it some attention not only keeps your kitchen cleaner but also extends the life of the appliance.

How to Clean Your Range Hood

  1. Unplug or turn off the unit
Safety first. Make sure your range hood is off before you start.

  2. Remove the filters
Most metal filters slide or pop out easily. Check your owner’s manual if you’re unsure how to remove them.

  3. Soak the filters
Fill your sink with very hot water and a good squirt of degreasing dish soap. Add a bit of baking soda to help cut through built-up residue. Let the filters soak for 15–20 minutes.

  4. Scrub and rinse
Use a soft brush or sponge to gently scrub away any remaining grease. Rinse thoroughly with hot water and let them dry completely before putting them back.

  5. Wipe the hood surface
Clean the inside and outside of the hood with warm, soapy water or a degreaser. Pay attention to buttons, lights, and seams where oil can collect. For stainless steel, finish with a quick polish to restore shine.

When to Replace Filters

If your range hood has charcoal or paper filters, replace them according to the manufacturer’s recommendations—typically every six months. Starting the year with fresh filters ensures your kitchen ventilation works efficiently.

A Simple Step Toward a Cleaner Year

Including your range hood in your New Year cleaning routine helps your home feel refreshed from top to bottom. It’s one of those small, satisfying tasks that pays off with cleaner air, better performance, and a brighter kitchen to match your fresh start.
